Community Design Excellence Awards

Bancroft Community Clinic wins 2007 CDEA!

This year’s award recipient is the Bancroft Community Clinic located in downtown Bancroft, IA.  The Clinic was brought to life as a collaborative effort amongst three groups: The Bancroft Community Foundation, the city of Bancroft, and Kossuth Regional Health Center of Algona.

The Clinic brings much needed medical resources to the area and its location brings life to Bancroft’s downtown.  Various sites were examined for the Clinic, but the vacant lumberyard downtown was the best fit for the community.  Other sites were less expensive to acquire and build upon, but the downtown location was chosen because of it’s potential.

The decision is already proving to be catalyst in revitalization efforts as period lighting is currently being installed in Bancroft

The year 2000 was the beginning of the Community Design Excellence Awards, a new Iowa Architectural Foundation program. This program recognizes governmental organizations, subdivisions, non-governmental not-for-profit organizations, and/or local citizen groups for significant achievements in the promotion of new quality architecture, preservation of existing quality architecture or community design. The awards place emphasis on a project’s quality of design, the built environment’s impact on the quality of life within the community where the project is built, and the impact the project has had in bringing the community together in its support.

Projects have ranged from adaptive re-use of dilapidated buildings, to entire community revitalization projects. Consideration is given to community design projects that significantly impact the quality of life of a city or neighborhood and to groups that understand the importance of the built environment on a community’s social fabric and, through the rehabilitation of that environment, maintain a continued functionality and use. In addition, consideration of new construction of architectural significance that contributes to or enhances the surrounding community environment is examined to be worthy of an award.
