Architectural Motor Coach Tour: University of Iowa
On Saturday, October 21, the Iowa Architectural Foundation (IAF) is offering a daylong tour of some of the buildings designed by world-renowned architects on the University of Iowa’s campus in Iowa City. The tour will originate in Des Moines at 7 AM, and guests will travel by motor coach, returning the same day at 6:30PM. Tours of each building will be approximately 1 hour. The tour’s five buildings include:
Hancher Auditorium (Pelli Clarke Pelli (New Haven) & OPN Architects (Cedar Rapids, Iowa City, Des Moines)
Visual Arts Building (Stephen Holl Architects (New York) & BNIM Architects (Des Moines)
Old Capitol (EYP (Boston, Albany) & OPN Architects (Cedar Rapids, Des Moines, Iowa City). The building dates back to 1840, and has had many additions and restorations, including one after the fire of 2001. It is the only National Historic Landmark in Iowa City and one of 26 in the state.
Voxman Music Building (LMN (Seattle) & Neumann Monson Architects (Iowa City, Des Moines) It’s been said, regarding the shaped Concert Hall ceiling, that “this aluminum snowflake has the acoustic smarts of a Gothic cathedral.” (Architizer.com)
University of Iowa Stead Family Children’s Hospital (Norman Foster Partners (London, NY), Heery International (Iowa City), and Stanley Beaman & Sears Architecture and Interiors)
There are so many new buildings because in 2008, floodwaters from the Iowa River destroyed Hancher Auditorium and 20 other treasured buildings on the University of Iowa’s campus. Last year the University completed a campus-wide comeback, with the grand opening of the new Hancher, a new school of music and a new visual arts building.
The cost of the tour is $140, which includes bus transportation, snack, a delicious lunch at Devotay, group fees as well as curriculum presented during the trip. A portion of the fee is a donation to the Foundation, to support their education and community programs. Participants will receive a letter indicating such for income tax purposes.
Tickets are limited. Reserve your spot by calling Claudia Cackler at the Iowa Architectural Foundation, 515-244-1888 or email email@example.com. Reservations will be confirmed when payment is received. Cancellations received through 4:30 PM, Thursday, October 5, 2017, will receive 50% refund per person. After that time, cancellations will not be refunded, but may be transferred to another party.
