These tours, sponsored by Kum & Go, provide an opportunity for local residents and visitors to appreciate the rich architectural heritage of Iowa’s capital city.  Choose from 4 separate routes.

Tours cover contemporary and historic architecture – detail, style, elements, intriguing facts, and historical significance of the buildings that shape the downtown skyline.

Adventures in Architecture Summer day camp at des moines social club
july 15 – 19

9:00 AM to 4:00 PM
$225 (includes bus tour, materials fee)

Ever wonder how buildings stand up, or what an architect does? Join us for Adventures in Architecture, sponsored by the Iowa Architectural Foundation and Terracon Foundation! Campers will be led by architects, interns and high school students involved in an architectural mentor program. You’ll engage in the design process, visit an architect’s and engineering office, take a field trip to some landmark buildings in Des Moines, and go on an architect-guided walking tour of downtown Des Moines to scout out architectural styles and elements. You will work on your own models, presenting your projects on the last day of class.

DEFINING MODERN: MASTERS OF MID-CENTURY FURNITURE & DESIGN

SATURDAY, APRIL 13, 2019, MEREDITH HALL, DRAKE UNIVERSITY, des moines, 9 – 11:30 AM, $25

Iowa Architectural Foundation (IAF) is collaborating with Knoll, Saxton and Drake University on a signature educational event that you won’t want to miss!  Iowa is home to many architectural gems of the Mid-Century Modern design movement, including several on the Drake University campus. IAF’s Architecture Month event will be held in Meredith Hall, designed by famed architect Mies van der Rohe in 1965. Have your morning coffee while you enjoy two richly-illustrated presentations, accompanied by a display of original Knoll furniture classics by master designers including Florence Knoll, Eero Saarinen, Harry Bertoia, Mies van der Rohe and Marcel Breuer. Afterwards, take part in guided architectural walking tours of Drake’s campus, focusing on the Modernist legacy.

Eat. Drink. Architecture.  April 20, 2019, starts in the east village, Des moines

This progressive food, drink, and architectural walking tour of downtown Des Moines begins at the Iowa Taproom, continuing to Truman’s, Des Moines’ new Kansas City-style pizza tavern featuring KC sports memorabilia, then on to the Royal Mile, and returns to the Iowa Taproom. Each stop features appetizers, beer samples, and conversation, with dessert at the final stop. The 2019 event will provide four separate starting times.  Departures will be at 12:00 pm, 12:30 pm, 1:00 pm or 1:30 pm.
