Architecture on the Move summer walking tours in des moines

Guided by design professionals, these tours of downtown Des Moines provide an opportunity for local residents and visitors to appreciate the rich architectural heritage of Iowa’s capital city. Multiple tours are available, including custom designed, private tours and school field trip tours.

Adventures in Architecture Summer day camp
August 6 – 10
Ages: 8-12
9:00 AM to 4:00 PM
$225 (includes bus tour, materials fee)

Ever wonder how buildings stand up, or what an architect does? Join us for Adventures in Architecture, sponsored by the Iowa Architectural Foundation! Campers will be led by architects, interns and high school students involved in an architectural mentor program. You’ll engage in the design process, visit an architect’s and an engineering office, take a field trip to some landmark buildings in Des Moines, and go on an “Architective” walking tour to scout out architectural elements. You will work on your own model building with a team, presenting your project on the last day of class.

Fall classes 2018

ARCHITECTURAL PHOTOGRAPHY – three session class

Dates: September 22nd, 29th & October 6th

Meets: Saturdays, 9:00 AM to 10:30 AM

Location: Iowa Center for Architecture,400 Locust St. #100, Des Moines., Ste. 100, Des Moines (Capital Square)

Instructor: Iowa Architectural Foundation (Tim Bungert, AIA)

Cost: $54

Expand your knowledge of architecture through photography. The first session of this popular class will discuss photography basics including composition, lighting, and scale along with examples of architectural photography. The second session features a tour of downtown Des Moines that will allow participants to photograph along the way. This tour may extend beyond the allotted class time as desired by participants. Students will select and print photos for the third session critique. Digital camera required, SLR preferred. No phone cameras, please. Students will need to print up to four 8 x 10 photographs before the third session.

Class meets three Saturdays

ARCHITECTURE IN DOWNTOWN DES MOINES  – three session class

Dates:  Tuesday, September 25th, October 2nd & Saturday October 6th

Times: 6:00-7:30 pm Tuesdays & 10:00-11:30 am Saturday Tour

Location: Iowa Center for Architecture @ Capital Square, 400 Locust St. #100, Des Moines

Instructor: Tom Wollan, AIA and Karl Kaufman, AIA

Cost: $54

Attend this class on downtown Des Moines’ architectural treasures! An overview of architectural trends that shaped downtown over the past 130 years forms the first two session.  The third is a walking tour that includes Hotel Row, examples of Art Deco, and a building by “Make no little plans” Daniel Burnham, FAIA.

Architecture Month Events April 28 & 29: Support IAF and have a splendid Mid-Century Modern Weekend

Saturday, April 28: Mid-Century Modern Home Tour in Oskaloosa

Save the date for an exclusive opportunity to tour the famed Lamberson home, designed by Frank Lloyd Wright, and three other fantastic architect-designed homes in Oskaloosa that are rarely available for viewing. Travel to Oskaloosa is on your own. Ticket sales begin on March 15 at Mid Mod Iowa. The cost is $60 for all four homes, and only 100 tickets are available. Tours available at 10 AM and 1 PM. M

Sunday, April 29, 2 PM: Lecture and book signing at the Greater Des Moines Botanical Garden 

Ethne Clarke, reknowned lecturer and author, will explore the origins of mid-century modern garden design, revealing how architects like Frank Lloyd Wright and Cliff May worked with landscape architects to blur the divisions between indoors and outdoors. She will sign copies of new book, The Mid-Century Modern Garden. Tickets available now at Eventbrite.

Proceeds from both events will help fund Iowa Architectural Foundation programming around the state, increasing the public’s awareness of the value of architecture in building a better world.

Classes 2018 

DES MOINES AND THE CITY BEAUTIFUL MOVEMENT       3 sessions            DMPS Cost: $54

At the turn of the previous century, Des Moines’ leaders believed creating a beautiful city would inspire the inhabitants toward moral and civic virtue and invigorate the downtown. Participants will learn this history in a classroom setting and conclude with a walking tour of the civic buildings on Principal Riverwalk.

WHAT STYLE IS YOUR HOUSE?                                                  3 sessions            DMPS Cost: $54

Learn about residential architecture in Des Moines and how to identify many different styles.  Tour a Des Moines neighborhood to discover what kinds of homes were built there and why. From Native American dwellings to Levitt Town, find out the history of the single family home and its major trends.
