Proudfoot Bird & Rawson designed this 19-story skyscraper, with a 4-story tower, for the Equitable Life Insurance Co. in 1923. It was constructed by A.H. Neumann Co.  It features Gothic Revival with Medieval detailing, and was the tallest building in Iowa between 1924 – 1973.  Materials include polished granite, cast iron panels and terra cotta. Distinctive corbels at the third floor feature gnomes that appear to be straining to hold up the building. The “Lantern” is a water tower for fire protection.  Voted one of the 50 most significant Iowa buildings of the 20th Century by AIA. The building consists of retail, office and residential spaces.
