Herbert Lewis Kruse Blunck Architecture (HLKB) was headquartered in the Fleming Building in downtown Des Moines. The original firm was founded in 1961 by Charles“Chick” Herbert, and was known as Charles Herbert and Associates. The practice won more than 200 awards for excellence in master planning and architectural, urban and interior design. The firm’s projects ranged from a $2,000 children’s play space to a $25 million corporate office complex. They received national AIA Honor awards for five diverse projects: a historical restoration, a factory, and advertising agency, a retail store and a complex urban project weaving together a parking garage, public transit facility and day care center. Herbert Lewis Kruse Blunck Architecture was awarded the American Institute of Architects’ Firm Award in 2001.
